Frequently Asked Questions

question
Why should we go with Alaska Bear Adventures?
ANSWER:
  • Bears are our passion! Considering that this is ALL we do, our focus, knowledge, and experience are exclusively for your Alaska Bear Adventure. From May to September, our team lives and breaths bear viewing to make sure you have the trip of a lifetime.
  • Safety is our #1 priority. Alaska Bear Adventures has been operating since 2010 and our safety record is flawless. Our job is to take care of you so that you can enjoy viewing Alaska’s greatest coastal brown bears.
question
When is the best time to view bears in Alaska?
ANSWER:
  • The prime opportunity to view bears with us is from June through early September for coastal brown bears. If you’re planning to visit Brooks Falls, the best viewing there is from July to September. All summer long brown bears are focused on food so of course they head to the coast and to the falls to fill up.
  • If you’re looking to see the bears catch salmon on the coast, you’re more likely to see this mid-July through the end of summer. Before the salmon start running, in May and June you will see the bears primarily digging for clams and grazing the fields of sedge grass.
question
What should I bring?
ANSWER:
  • Adventuring in Alaska, no matter where you go, always prepare for any type of weather. If there is something that we can’t say enough, pack that extra layer. We want you to be comfortable during your trip, so please pack for cool and wet weather, and hope you need to remove layers for warmer weather.
  • Everyone is allowed to bring up to 10 lbs (4.53 kg) with them. Bring a small day pack with you to fit your camera, extra layer, snack, water, and whatever else you may need.
  • When you check in for your Alaska Bear Adventure, our reservationists will provide you with a list to take with you that has all the necessary do’s and don’ts on what to bring.
question
Is this safe?
ANSWER:
  • Yes! These particular brown bears are protected in Katmai National Park and Lake Clark National Park, which means they are not threatened by us being there with them. Many of these bears have grown up with us in their presence so to them, we are just another animal respectively viewing them in their habitat. When you are out there, our trained guides know how to read bear behavior and know how to place you and your group safely.
  • If you’re going to Brooks Falls, this is a self-guided tour but there are many park rangers there to assist with any questions you may have. You will be required to attend the safety orientation hosted by the park rangers in Katmai National Park before you hike to the viewing areas.
question
What are the physical requirements?
ANSWER:
  • As you are traveling into remote areas in Alaska, yes, there are physical requirements depending on what tour you have booked.
  • If you are on one of our coastal tours, this is where we have more physical restrictions. You must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, be able to step up onto a chair (like you’re getting into a small aircraft), be able to walk up to 3 to 5 miles, and be able to walk at a steady pace along with your group.
  • We also offer private coastal tours so if you feel like you could do this tour, but want to travel at your own pace or just with your group, please call us to see what we have available.
  • At Brooks Falls there are maintained trails, walking paths, and enclosed viewing platforms. You must be able to step up onto a chair (like you’re getting into a small aircraft) and be able to walk up to 2 to 3 miles.
question
What is the maximum party size?
ANSWER:
  • For our coastal tour, we can take up to 15 people. Each plane can hold up to 5 passengers.
  • For Brooks Falls, we can take up to 15 people between three planes.
